THE GUY ON THE RIGHT was a total winner but I’m not sure Kate Stewart expected to write another book set in this world at first. However, I knew I had to have it the moment i was announced. I’m not gonna lie, I’m a little mad right now – I was not expecting for this to end in a cliffy. I’m not a fan of cliffhangers to start with but I can deal as long as I know there is one. Ah well, moving on.

THE GUY IN THE MIDDLE is Lance’s story, the quiet guy, the loner who keeps to himself and doesn’t have real relationships except with his family. Until he meets Harper. These two rub each other the wrong way from the beginning but soon they find that they have more things in common than they thought and the things they don’t have in common complement them. I loved their chemistry and their natural progression from friendship into more. Harper, with her tender, compassionate heart and sass and Lance, the brooder, whose sense of humor surprised the hell out of me, were easy to love. They are so typically Kate Stewart, edgy, full of flaws but lovable nonetheless.

To him, this may be nothing unusual, to me, it’s everything. It’s like I’m being seen for the first time, center stage. It feels so spectacularly real.

Lance and Harper are so wrapped up in one another that they ignore the strong possibility of their bubble to burst. Because, you see, Harper is a daddy’s girl and her father would blow a gasket if he knew about his daughter’s relationship. And, of course, the bubble bursts. Now here I have to admit that I wasn’t a fan about how Harper reacted to this and it makes me think she doesn’t deserve this wonderful man, but it makes sense and helps when you know that the continuation of this story will come in January 2020. I have high hopes for the next part of this book – I’m still mad but Kate Stewart gets away with a lot of stuff I usually find unforgivable. So there is that. But I definitely loved how Lance fought for Harper.

I’m enamored by her. There’s not one thing about her that grates on me, not even when I’m pissed at her. Nothing about this girl rubs me wrong.

THE GUY IN THE MIDDLE isn’t rom-com – another thing you wouldn’t expect after THE GUY ON THE RIGHT but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s got this author’s usual angst and the story itself has some emotional parts that showcase the best of Harper and Lance’s relationship and show you why they are made for each other. So I’ll wait for the conclusion, grumbling a little and quietly cussing out Kate Stewart for leaving me high and dry. Because at the end of the day, I loved this story so much and I know Ms Stewart will fix this in her own unique, awesome way.

“I hate you.”
“No, you don’t.”
“I want to.”
“You can’t. You’ve got the best heart of anyone I’ve ever met,”

** THE GUY IN THE MIDDLE is part of the Team Player 2 Anthology.

About Kate Stewart

A Texas native, Kate Stewart lives in North Carolina with her husband, Nick, and her naughty beagle, Sadie. She pens messy, sexy, angst-filled contemporary romance, as well as romantic comedy and erotic suspense because it's what she loves as a reader.

Kate is a lover of all things '80s and '90s, especially John Hughes films and rap. She dabbles a little in photography, can knit a simple stitch scarf for necessity, and on occasion, does very well at whiskey.
