A DOM IS FOREVER
by Lexi Blake
In this third installment of the Masters and Mercenaries we finally get manwhore Liam O’Donnell’s story. I’ve been curious about him since I started this series and he did not disappoint. I love when one of the players is being brought to his knees. And Liam went down beautifully and with flying colors. He fell for a Jane Plain he didn’t see coming. The girl who had the softest heart.
When I began reading this book I thought of Avery as bland. She didn’t have much of a personality despite her having lost pretty much everything and everyone she loved. Only when Liam made her submit she started to show willpower and spine and it came entirely unexpected. She had some cute, sassy moments but I have to admit that I never really fell in love with her. I also never felt that she her submission was genuine – a self conscious, inexperienced, shy girl suddenly turned into a sexbomb who is all of a sudden into BDSM in the course of a couple of days? That’s stretching my fantasy a little too much.
Liam however is a force of nature and I loved him. He, too, has lost everything and while he shows the world a fairly carefree face his demons show up at night in his sleep. When the past collided with his present things are getting really tangled up. When he meets Avery her innocence is the first thing he notices and it is what makes him look closer. The woman who has a shyness and an understated prettiness about her suddenly holds so much appeal that he wants to dominate and possess her.
I don’t want your body. I want your soul. I want your everything. And I definitely want your orgasms. I want them all. I’ll be a greedy bastard, savoring them and hoarding them all for myself. You wanted to give me your body? I can buy that on a street corner, sweetheart. You’re the one who’s being selfish now.”
Was it realistic? No way! But the fairy-tale-ish romance is exactly what we sometimes need to believe that everything is possible when it comes to love. Both of them find solace in each other. They are the balm the fissures in their respective souls need to heal.
Again we get a superbly plotted suspense and it starts to thicken and I suspect this storyline will have its climax in Ian’s book. The whole spy/MI-6/CIA mystery is one hell of a page turner. I am thoroughly enjoying myself when I read a book from this series, while I’m first and foremost a romance reader it’s the incredibly intricate overarching plot that makes me coming back for more and I’m looking forward to get to Alex and Eve’s story. There seems to be a lot of heartache!
“Maybe my love ain’t worth much just yet, but I’m working on that. I’m going to be better. I’m going to be worthy. I’ll learn from you. I’ll change for you. I’ll be a good man. I’ll be a man you want for more than an orgasm. I’ll be a man you can trust.”
